Rangers supporters have been reasonably satisfied in recent times after seeing their side begin to produce the goods on a regular basis in the Scottish Premiership.
Steven Gerrard’s men made a fast start to the new season in qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League, but they didn’t make great strides domestically in winning just three of their opening seven Scottish Premiership matches. Yet things have picked up greatly since then with the Light Blues now within striking distance of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic at the summit, thus setting up what should be a thrilling second half of the Scottish season.
Thus, there have been many satisfied Rangers fans up and down the country in recent times, with many of the club’s summer signings very much proving their worth in the first half of the season.
And one man who certainly falls into that category is centre back Connor Goldson, who made the move to Ibrox from Brighton for just £3.06 million (as per Transfermarkt) – it’s a genius Gerrard call which is looking increasingly like a Rangers steal.
Ultimately, the Liverpool legend inherited a Rangers side that were woeful defensively last season, shipping more goals than any other team that finished in the top seven of the Scottish Premiership, at the same time losing the likes of David Bates and Bruno Alves over the summer.
Thus, it was plainly obvious that Gerrard needed to spend some money on his backline, and he certainly appears to have spent it wisely on compatriot Goldson, who has since become a lynchpin in the heart of the Light Blues defence.
The 25-year-old struggled for first team football at Brighton in the second half of last season to plunge into doubt his future at the AMEX Stadium, and Gerrard clearly sensed an opportunity for a shrewd deal by luring him to Ibrox – and what a decision that has proven to be.
And that’s because Goldson has been a rock in the Rangers backline in starting all but one of their league games this season as well as all of their Europa League group stage clashes – he appears to be the number one centre back at the club.
Yes, there have been some nervy moments, but on the whole the 25-year-old has played a key part in shoring up the Gers backline – he looks set to play a vital role in whatever success the club have this season.
And for just £3.06 million, the addition of the defender is looking more and more like a genius call from Gerrard, and one that is looking more like a steal with every passing day.
