Prove yourself: These 2 Arsenal players need to impress their manager during pre-season

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern tonight are drinking to forget their terrible season, and are demanding more next time out.

By all accounts, Arsenal had a terrible season last season, a fifth-place finish was only made slightly better by an FA Cup win against Chelsea in May.

Poor performances across the board and uncertainty surrounding Arsene Wenger ended up costing The Gunners as they finished outside the top four for the first time since the 95/96 Premier League season.

Whilst it is unfair to place all the blame on certain players, there are a few Arsenal players that need to start pulling their weight a bit more.

Having signed a new two-year contract, Wenger will have his eye on underperforming players as he looks to not only regain a place in the top four, but to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004.

On that note, here are two Arsenal players who need to impress their manager during pre-season…

Francis Coquelin

To the dismay of Arsenal fans, Francis Coquelin lined up 29 times for The Gunners in the league last season, with 22 of those being in the starting 11.

The central defensive midfielder just looks lost in the centre of the park. Memories of his terrible defending that led to Robben’s goal in Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing in the Champions League last season come to mind.

He offers nothing defensively and nothing going forward, so if he wants to keep his place, he’ll need to have a seriously good pre-season.

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi being on this list is not to say he is a bad player, it’s quite the opposite. However, our landlord has been saying for a while that the young Nigerian needs his chance and last season he got it.

26 appearances in the league with 18 coming as a part of the starting eleven got a return of three goals and four assists.

Whilst that’s not terrible, with the likes of Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sanchez ahead of him in the pecking order, he’ll need to have a top pre-season to give Wenger something to think about.
