Steven Gerrard has come to Ibrox with what could be seen as a poisoned chalice of a job.
The Liverpool legend is tasked with getting Rangers to compete with cross-city rivals Celtic, who have completed successive trebles. This will be no easy challenge, with Celtic possessing the talents of players such as Olivier Ntcham, Scott Brown, Kieran Tierney and Scott Sinclair.
Steven Gerrard has no previous experience of senior management, but his name and contact book should help the Gers attract a better standard of player than they have been in recent times. He has recruited the likes of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson to make the Ibrox outfit more competitive. The signings of Katic and Goldson show that Gerrard feels his central defence is in major need of improvement.
However, its going forward Rangers need more activity. Josh Windass showed what he can do in spells, but they lag behind Celtic badly in the attacking department. They need more goals and creativity in the side. Rangers need to show some serious ambition this window, as they look for their 55th Scottish title.

He is now 32-years-old, but he has the experience and knack of goalscoring which could really help Rangers progress. Ulloa is a deadly finisher, and that is something Rangers have been lacking for a long time. A Premier League winner with Leicester City, this is the calibre of signing the Gers should be aiming for.
Gerrard should do everything to try and bring the Argentine to Ibrox.
The £6m rated gem could do for Rangers what Scott Sinclair did for Celtic.
Scott Sinclair brought the quality from the English Premier League to the Scottish Premiership, and set the league alight in his first season in Glasgow. Christian Atsu could do the same for Gerrard’s Rangers.
With Newcastle United looking to operate a sell-to-buy style, they need to offload valuable players to re-invest in other areas of the squad. The Ghanaian is a realistic coup for Rangers.
Christian Atsu would bring pace and directness to Rangers. He has both the creativity and the goal scoring ability Rangers crave. Cutting in from the wing, he would terrify Scottish Premiership defences.
