Queens Park Rangers manager Michael Beale telling Wolves he will stay in the Championship is ‘brilliant’ news, says Sky Sports pundit Dean Ashton.
The Lowdown: Beale rejects Wolves
Wolverhampton Wanderers had identified the 42-year-old as their number one target to replace the sacked Bruno Lage after being rejected by Julen Lopetegui earlier this month.
Reports on Thursday morning claimed that the Old Gold had made an official approach to speak to the Hoops boss regarding the vacancy at Molineux, but much to everyone’s surprise, he turned the offer down to remain at Loftus Road.
The Latest: Ashton reacts
Speaking live on Sky Sports News as the reports broke, Ashton was full of praise for Beale’s decision to tell Wolves no and excited about QPR’s future:
“I think it made it more difficult the fact that they are top of the league and he maybe feels like he can finish the job that he said he would start on the project at QPR.
“Again, we’re not privy to what deal Wolves have offered, or whether QPR have said to him as well about something improved for himself there.
“Either way, I think it’s brilliant for QPR and the players and the staff and the supporters because they’ve been on such a good run, there’s such a good feel factor about the place and that would have been all taken away if he’d have left, so I think it’s great for the Championship the fact that he’s stayed.”
The Verdict: Huge boost
Beale has only been in charge for five months, but knowing that he’s committed his future and has turned down the chance to join the Premier League will be a huge boost for QPR.
The former Aston Villa assistant has got off to a flying start, winning eight and drawing three of his 16 matches in charge, with his team currently top of the table (Transfermarkt).
The Bromley-born coach must hold the belief that he can get his side promoted, and if that does happen come the end of the season, it won’t be long before he’s making a Molineux appearance in the opposition dugout.
