Rangers: Alex Rae backs Alfredo Morelos to stay at Rangers and compete for title

Pundit's choice

Former Rangers midfielder and BT Sport pundit, Alex Rae, has questioned the wisdom of selling Alfredo Morelos during the January transfer window, if the Gers want to compete for the Scottish Premiership title.

Speaking on the Ladbrokes Social Club and reported in The Evening Times, Rae explained why he thinks it would be such a bad move to cash in, regardless of the transfer fee.

Will Alfredo Morelos finish the season a Rangers player?

No

When questioned about what Rangers should do if a big-money offer came in for Morelos, Rae responded:

“It’s very difficult, it’s a very different proposition when you’re talking about a bid of tens of millions, you’d have to look at that from a business aspect”.

“But I agree with Steven Gerrard, if Morelos goes in January you may as well wrap it up, pull down the shutters because it’d be extremely difficult for the fans to take because they’ve had so many barren years of late”.

“100 percent it won’t happen, these guys are willing to put millions upon millions, year on year, to get to a particular level.

“They’re at that level where they’re competing on all fronts at the moment. To sell your main asset goes against everything.

“For me, they may well wait in the summer which could give Ross Wilson the potential to get a good replacement in place, and you’d have a lot of money coming back into the club.”

If Rangers are to have any chance of winning the league this season, they must have Morelos leading the line for the full season.

The Colombian is Rangers’ main asset and with another call-up at international level, his value is only going to increase, especially if he continues his current form.

Not only is he tearing up Scottish football, but he has 10 goals in 11 Europa League games, a record that could start to draw attention from bigger continental teams than Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, who are both said to be interested in the centre-forward.

Rae is correct, in any other season, Rangers probably wouldn’t think twice about cashing in, but the desperation to win, not only silverware, but the league title, changes things dramatically. And if Steven Gerrard is to be believed, Morelos won’t be leaving any time soon.

Rangers fans, can the club keep hold of Morelos? Let us know in the comment section below!
