Monday marked 27 years to the day since the Battle of Britain clash between Rangers and Leeds United in the inaugural Champions League and the defining second leg at Elland Road.
With Rangers taking a 2-1 lead into the tie, many thought that Leeds would be too strong on their own patch and overcome the Scottish champions.
For those too young to remember, the original Champions League format featured two groups of four teams with the winner of each group meeting in the final, which in 1993 would be Marseille (from Rangers’ group) and AC Milan.
Marseille won the final but their season had been littered with allegations of corruption and bribery and would eventually see them suspended from defending their trophy.
The Rangers attacking duo of Ally McCoist and Mark Hateley, ably assisted by Ian Durrant in midfield, proved to be too strong for Leeds and the Scots won 4-2 on aggregate.
These Rangers fans took to Twitter to reminisce about one of the club’s most famous nights in Europe after @ChampionsLeague put out a clip of one of the goals, with one fan in particular clearly still holding a grudge about the controversy surrounding Marseille.
One of the best goals ever. What a strike. Also having been written off in the Battle of Britain by the English media I seem to remember Leeds fans actually applauded us at the end. Class.
