Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos has been defended by his club’s fans after his recent friendly appearances for Colombia were criticised in a report from The Daily Record.
The newspaper selected several quotes from Colombian media outlets, with one unnamed source describing Morelos’ performance as a “failed experiment”.
The Record article centred on the negative reviews of the performance from Scotland’s top goalscorer from last season – instead of highlighting how positively it reflects on the Scottish game having Colombia select a player from the Scottish Premiership.
In contrast, Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard’s performances for the France U21s have seen him labelled as ‘remarkable’ despite it only being at youth level – with Morelos’ appearances have been as a senior international.
Rangers fans and a South American football correspondent took to social media to criticise and question the accuracy of the article in defence of Morelos’ performances with some who watched the game highlighting how poor the team had been as a whole and that the Rangers forward was one of a few to come out with any credit.
Some fans accused the Daily Record of painting a false narrative following Morelos’ performance:
Funny how a media outlet, known for their hatred of Rangers, are writing quotes but not saying who from and saying they’re disappointed in Morelos. I’ve seen countless tweets from Colombian pages saying he was the only good player
Also throwing in a Morelos red card video too 😂 https://t.co/pyEdQgWwAW pic.twitter.com/1Bt7qdqXx6

Whereas a Colombian football expert/journalist said the opposite to the DR. He said Morelos was Colombia’s stand out player on the night. https://t.co/mo5MmU2DEJ

Meanwhile, these fans, who watched the game, were more objective in their analysis of Morelos’ performance and bemoaned the lack of service that the striker got from his team-mates:
I watched the game unfortunately. Columbia were dire for most of it. Morelos had no service for the most part. Most of his teammates very interested in falling over and complaining to the ref

I watched the game Andrew, Colombia were absolutely terrible hardly ever got the ball forward, Morelos when he did get the ball played well enough maybe not his usual excellent standard but was about the only Colombian player that would have got pass marks

He did well on little or no service. The atmosphere was really hostile for a friendly and Algeria were fired up. I was surprised at how poor Colombia were. Morelos was a 6/7 out of ten. Most of the side were 5 or 6. He’ll get more chances further down the line.
