To find something to complain about when your side wins a Scottish Premier League match 7-1 is always going to be hard, but yesterday during Steven Gerrard’s side’s demolition of Motherwell at Ibrox, The Gers found something to slate. As the sides came out for the 2nd half, Stevie G opted to bring off Nikola Katic and brought on Gareth McAuley, to the frustration of the fans.
46' SUB: Once change at the interval for the Gers. Gareth McAuley comes on to replace Nikola Katic. 3-1
— Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) November 11, 2018
Seeing McAuley enter the fray wasn’t what did it for the fans, instead it was the fact that their Croatian centre-back, who has been so good when relied upon this season, was the man who Gerrard decided should make way for the veteran defender. When the substitution was made the Bluenoses were already 3-1 up and would go on to win 7-1, but the fans weren’t to know that and were far from happy with their side’s first change.
Nikola Katic started the season strongly and alongside Connor Goldson, it looked like he’d be one of the main figures in the club’s backline. However, in recent weeks Gerrard has opted to play Joe Worrall alongside Goldson and that has left Katic fighting for a place on the bench with McAuley. Yesterday the fans were delighted to see the defender get some much-needed game-time and you can understand their frustrations when he was taken off.

This really really annoys me

Bizarre. If we're hooking players for mistakes then Grezda should be the first off in this game.

Katic had a dreadful first half, but I’m hoping it’s only because of that and not an injury.

The Gers were far from happy to see the defender replaced and will hope Gerrard opts to give the defender some more game time in the coming weeks.
