James Tavernier may come in for a lot of criticism at times, but he rarely deserves it. When the defender is in form he’s one of the best in the Scottish Premier League and yesterday he was at his very best both in attack and defence, as he opened the scoring after just two minutes in the Old Firm and also went on to help keep a clean sheet.

Understandably, the defender received a glowing review for his performance from all who watched him in yesterday’s Old Firm. The Gers’ skipper has been sublime for most of the season and once again he starred as a goalscoring defender yesterday, taking his tally in the Scottish Premier League to a mightily impressive 14 goals, putting him 4th on the top scorer’s list this season, not bad for a defender with a meagre Transfermarkt valuation of just £1.8 million.
To go with those incredible 14 goals, Tavernier also has 14 assists. All of those have come from right-back, and it really is baffling that the defender hasn’t received the same kind of media attention that Alfredo Morelos has received this season for his end product. No player in Scotland has contributed to more goals than Tavernier’s 28 this season, and he’s being rightly lauded for his efforts yesterday and this season.

The Gers will be desperate to see more of Tavernier in this kind of form and have complete faith in the defender going just as strong next season and adding to improving on this season’s goal tally.
