Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has compared Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos to Gerd Muller.
Morelos compared to Muller
The Gers face the Portuguese side in the Europa League on Thursday, and Morelos could well be chosen by Steven Gerrard to lead the line.
Ahead of the match, Jesus spoke to Sport TV (via The Daily Record), and heaped praise on the Colombia international. He said:
“The striker is very well-known.
“He’s a Colombian who doesn’t have much of a playing style, he doesn’t have an elegant aesthetic, but he’s very dangerous.
“He’s got that style like Gerd Muller.
“They play in a very complicated system, they try to imitate Liverpool’s 4-3-3 which I know from playing against them in the Club World Cup Final.”
Morelos has been a fantastic goal-getter for the 54-time Scottish champions. After all, he has managed 83 goals in 153 games since making the move in 2017, and a strike against Benfica would see him break the record for the most goals scored by a player for the Gers in European competition.
To compare him to Muller, though, is rather astonishing. The former Bayern Munich and Germany striker is one of greatest goalscorers football has ever seen. In 576 games for the Bavarians, he netted 515 times. He also bagged 68 strikes in just 62 caps for his country. That tally led to an impressive trophy haul, including three European Cups and a World Cup.
Does Morelos remind you of Gerd Muller?
Morelos is unlikely to ever match the feats of Der Bomber. The praise from Jesus does at least indicate that he is a talent on the rise, though.
In other news, Rangers fans laud this former Ibrox star.
