Rangers: Ex-Hibs man questions Connor Goldson

Rangers: Ex-Hibs man questions Connor Goldson -Rangers News

Former Hibernian man Stephane Omeonga has suggested that Standard Liege could be able to exploit Glasgow Rangers’ Connor Goldson on Thursday.

‘Not very fast’ Goldson the weak link

Omeonga spent 27 games on loan at Hibernian across two spells, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He now features for Pescara, who play in the Italian second tier.

Who scored more goals for the Gers?

He previously played for Cercle Brugge, whilst he also came through Anderlecht’s youth system. As such, he has been asked about his thoughts on Belgian outfit Liege ahead of the clash, and where they can target Rangers.

The 24-year-old believes they should look at exploiting Goldson. He said:

“Rangers are a very good team and play with British characteristics. Their game is very physical and attacking.

“Up front, Alfredo Morelos is their main goal threat and he is very strong. They also have Ryan Kent, a winger who came from Liverpool and Ianis Hagi is an exciting prospect who used to play for Genk.

“At the back, they have Connor Goldson who is a very English-style defender. He has a big athletic presence, but he’s not very fast.

“You can get balls behind the Rangers defence, it worries them. Standard have players who will be able to exploit them.

“With Standard’s qualities, they should not be afraid of Rangers. For me it is 50/50.”

Goldson hugely important to Gerrard

This does seem to be a bizarre suggestion from Omeonga. Only last Saturday, Goldson was in fantastic form at both ends of the pitch against Celtic. Not only did he make eight clearances and win four from his five duels, but he also scored both goals in a 2-0 win for his side.

Will Rangers beat Standard Liege on Thursday?

The £3.6m-valued 27-year-old (Transfermarkt) has averaged a Premiership rating of 7.38 this season, whilst Rangers have conceded just four goals in 14 games in all competitions. Yes, he may not have an abundance of pace, but that does not make him a weak link to target with balls in behind as Omeonga appears to suggest. Liege could do well to target other areas of the pitch this midweek.
