Steven Gerrard has said it is “imperative” Glasgow Rangers keep Ryan Kent at Ibrox.
Kent must stay
Kent was the subject of a £10m bid from Leeds United during the summer, but he ended up staying with the 54-time Scottish champions. There have been rumours of a new contract recently, but pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that the £3.15m-valued 24-year-old (Transfermarkt) will turn a new deal down at the club.
Speaking ahead of the Gers’ clash in the Europa League with Benfica, Gerrard made it clear just how much he wants him to stay north of the border. He said when asked how good Kent can be:
“As good as he wants. Ryan has all the tools and the ability and talent to go on improving and get to a different level, without a doubt.
“People judge Ryan on goals and assists and, of course, we do to a certain degree but we also judge him on his application on a daily basis. He’s in magnificent shape. He trains extremely hard in the gym and on the training pitch.
“He’s professional, selfless for the team. People often wonder why we have so much faith and why he plays a lot of games. It’s because – in and out of possession – he totally gets what we’re trying to do in terms of our philosophy.
“He does a lot of work that people probably don’t notice in terms of blocking lines and being in the right place in regaining the ball.
“He’s aggressive as a winger, which is rare. I’m a huge fan of Ryan Kent. He can go again, for sure, and it’s imperative that we keep him at this football club if we stay true to what we all want, which is success.”
Sending a message
Gerrard will be aware of how important it is to tie Kent down to a new contract as soon as possible – he called him a “game-changer” earlier this term. In regards to this season, a new deal will put any potential buyers off in January, and in the long term it will help them get the highest possible fee when he does depart.
Will Kent sign a new contract?
The boss is not naive – he will know that Kent’s career will not end north of the border. His eventual departure must be timed to perfection though. A new contract is what he deserves, and should probably keep him happy for this rest of this huge campaign.
