Kevin Phillips believes that Glasgow Rangers face a fight to hold on to James Tavernier in the long-term – but they will do all they can to hold on to him until the end of the campaign.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips believes that Tavernier will stay for the time being, at least, but those English sides will be present intriguing options. He said:
“James Tavernier has had a fantastic season so far.
“An attacking full-back who consistently gets himself into goalscoring positions. He certainly knows where the back of the net is whether it is from open play or the penalty spot.
“Of course, Premier League clubs will be looking at him and what he has achieved so far but I am sure Rangers will not be thinking about letting him go.
“Stopping 10-in-a-row is vital and Rangers are on a roll right now. A few of their players will be looked at by clubs in England if they keep this up.”
Fight to keep him
This season is without a doubt of huge importance to the Ibrox outfit – they are looking for a first piece of major silverware since 2011, and are also looking to end Celtic’s run of nine Premiership titles in a row. So far this campaign, Tavernier has been in stunning form, scoring 16 times and providing 12 assists despite being a right-back.
Is James Tavernier a Rangers legend?
They cannot afford for him to depart before the end of this campaign. However, ahead of next season, they could well face a big fight to keep him. After all, the Premier League is far more prestigious, more money is offer, and Tavernier does not have too much time to wait around for the perfect opportunity. Could he turn down a potential Champions League side such as Tottenham, for example? One wouldn’t have thought so.
