Aidrieonians manager Ian Murray has been discussing interest in Glasgow Rangers target Thomas Robert, and he has urged him to stay at the club for now and resist temptation to join the Gers at Ibrox.
Robert should stay
Robert, the son of former Newcastle winger Laurent, signed for the lower-league Scottish outfit during the summer on a free transfer. He has impressed so far, scoring three goals and providing two assists in 11 games for the club.
That has attracted the interest of the Gers, amongst others, and that has led to Murray urging Robert to stay for now. He told Lanarkshire Live sport:
“If someone is desperate for him and puts in an offer, then what can we do?
“We are football club developing young players and it’s great for us, but there’s nothing we can do.
“On the flip side, he can still be here if someone wants to buy him and loan him back.
“He needs to be in an environment that he is really happy with and safe in because he’s had a big move over from France, away from his family.
“He is a young man coming to Scotland – and amid Covid, which hasn’t helped anyone – so it has been tough.
“Does he need more upheaval of going somewhere else at this time?
“At this time, I would say absolutely not.
“But I’m speaking as the manager of Airdrie, who wants the best players on my team.
“He might see things totally differently.
“But there’s nothing there at the moment. He needs to keep producing, keep his consistency levels really high and if he does that, it’s just natural teams will be interested in him.
“From a personal point of view and a team point of view, of course [we are worried he will leave].
“He’s done exceptionally well, he’s a very good player.
“For his development and his point of view, it is fantastic. It’s fantastic for the club and the player.”
This would no doubt be a bargain for the Gers if they were able to capture Robert’s services. He has only just turned 20, and with him only having a one-year contract with his current club, they have very little power to hold on to him.
Would you like to sign Thomas Robert?
He is clearly a promising player, who could have signed for a number of clubs during the summer. It remains to be seen where he ends up in the coming months.
In other news, Rangers fans hammer this former player’s comments.
