BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has hammered Glasgow Rangers’ Filip Helander for his display against Benfica in the Europa League.
The Gers should have come away with all three points from Portugal, but they had to make do with a 3-3 draw in the end. Helander was one of the Ibrox outfit’s men who disappointed, with two of the three goals arguably his fault.
Sutton was far from happy with what he saw from the Sweden international. He said during BT Sport’s Europa League coverage (10.25 pm):
“Defended poorly and missed chances. A big opportunity missed, and they’ve put themselves under unnecessary pressure. He [Helander] had a terrible game. He got caught out. It’ll feel like it is two points dropped.”
Hard to argue
It is hard to disagree with Sutton’s comments – Helander was a liability on the night. With a SofaScore rating of just 6.2, he prevailed in only two of his eight duels, and was dribbled past on no less than three occasions. Against top-quality opposition like Benfica, he really has to do better.
Should Filip Helander start for Glasgow Rangers?
However, before those three strikes from the Portuguese side, the Gers had conceded just four goals in 12 games in all competitions with the £1.44m-valued 27 year-old (Transfermarkt) at the heart of their defence – he is still a hugely important player for them. Now, he just needs to recover from this disappointment as soon as possible and look ahead to the next match, against Hamilton in the Premiership.
