Mark Hateley believes Steven Gerrard must be careful when it comes to trimming his Glasgow Rangers squad this summer.

They have already made two signings in Fashion Sakala (rangers.co.uk) and John Lundstram, but with a big squad, Gerrard may want to move players on.
The Latest: Hateley sends warning
When discussing transfer plans, Hateley said (via The Scottish Sun):
“Steven Gerrard was talking about trimming the squad to a smaller number with better quality, which I agree with 100 per cent.
“But there is also a balancing act, because if you’re going to go for this competition and that competition, then you need people who can come in.
“Rangers have a great foundation right now with some great players. You can see they have gone to international level and they are lapping that up.”
The Verdict: Quality not quantity
The Gers clearly do not have too much of a problem – they won the title last term without losing a single game (thefishy.co.uk). However, their early exits in both domestic cups indicate that an increase in the overall quality of the squad would not go amiss.

As it stands, Gerrard has more than 30 players in his first-team squad – at some point, players will get restless and will be unhappy at their lack of playing time. As such, it makes sense that he wants to move players on – but as Hateley indicates, that must not come at the detriment of the rest of squad’s ability.
