Steven Gerrard has revealed he will try and get Alfredo Morelos to talk to the press about his Rangers future.
The manager appears to have been getting fed up with answering the question every time he has a press conference and told those in attendance at his latest one that he would try and put the Colombian forward in front of them to answer it.
“Alfredo is a huge part of what we are trying to do here,” Gerrard said (via The Scotsman). “Instead of me answering this question every single press conference, I’m going to do everything I can to put Alfredo in front of you guys.
“Then you can ask him the question whether he wants to be part of this going forward. I can only say I want him to be part of it. The decision lands with Alfredo.
“I’m sure now that he has been in this country two or three years, he knows ‘Yes’ and ‘No’.
“So can we have Alfredo up here please to stop me having to answer the question every time. I’ll do my best for you.”
Morelos’ future at the club has been an ongoing situation for as long as many can remember. The forward was heavily linked with a move to Girondins de Bordeaux in the summer of 2018 following a bid by the Ligue 1 outfit.
Speculation continued in January when Fotospor linked him with a possible move to Turkey with both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce thought to have been interested. Sky Sports continued the links in March as they claimed Leicester City and Borussia Dortmund were both thinking of making a move in the summer window.
The Scottish Sun recently stated AC Milan, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Girondins de Bordeaux and Eintracht Frankfurt are all firmly interested in Morelos as well, so it is understandable that Gerrard is starting to get annoyed having to answer the question all the time.
However, it is not difficult to see why the 23-year-old’s future is constantly in the limelight at Ibrox.
The South American, who is valued at £2.7million (Transfermarkt) has netted 49 goals in his 92 appearances for the club following his £1m move from HJK Helsinki, netting 30 times in 48 matches across all competitions last season (Transfermarkt). To put the 2018/19 figures into some context, only James Tavernier and Scott Arfield recorded double figures as well (WhoScored).
Although Gerrard’s frustrations with the question appear to be rather reasonable and one that some would unlikely have had as much patience with, it would be difficult to see Morelos be thrust into the spotlight and ‘attacked’ by the media.
With the evident quality the 23-year-old has to offer, interest will always likely follow the South American wherever he is and it is a question that is likely to linger for as long as he is a Rangers player, whilst there is no guarantee the probing will stop if he were to give them an answer.
So, Gerrard and the Light Blues might just have to suffer the speculation regarding his future for as long as they have to.
