Re-signing £1.8m-rated Anfield hero would be great business for Liverpool

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are hopeful that more deals will be concluded before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

Simon Mignolet was signed by Liverpool as a goalkeeper who exhibited great potential. Four seasons later and at the age of 29, it’s fair to say that Belgian has perhaps failed to realise his true talent. While our landlord recognises that the Belgian is a good player, capable of making important saves, he’s also far too inconsistent and prone to making needless mistakes.

When the former Sunderland goalkeeper arrived at Anfield, he displaced fan favourite, Pepe Reina, as the Reds’ first-choice shot stopper. Our landlord believes that Jurgen Klopp should attempt to entice the Spaniard with a return to Merseyside.

Despite being 34-years old,  Reina has proven to be of undeniable significance to Napoli, making 92 appearances for the Italian club over the course of the past two seasons. A player of his experience, knowledge and repute could be of immense importance to Liverpool as they prepare to fight on all four fronts this season.

Liverpool flaunt a wealth of attacking talent; they have one of the most potent forward lines in the Premier League. However, their defence doesn’t exhibit the same degree of talent.

The acquisition of Reina – now valued at just £1.80m by Transfermarkt – would help restore a sense of stability to Liverpool, not necessarily as their starting goalie, but as a player who will provide Mignolet with serious competition and invaluable guidance.
