Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are furious at the lack of transfer activity with the World Cup now just days away from commencing.
After finishing third in the Premier League, our regulars were expecting a huge summer transfer window. Mauricio Pochettino penned a new contract suggesting he would be backed by owner Daniel Levy in the market. However, our punters are yet to see a new signing arrive while Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United have already sealed big-money moves.
Instead, they have had to endure endless transfer speculation surrounding two of their best players. Toby Alderweireld has been constantly linked with an exit while Mousa Dembele is subject of interest from various Italian clubs. Dembele has been a key player for Pochettino and will need to be replaced.
The perfect man for the job could be Real Madrid midfielder – Mateo Kovacic. Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the Croatian started just ten games in La Liga, struggling to displace Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the starting eleven. He could be set to leave in search of regular game time.
Kovacic is an ideal box-to-box midfielder and would be an excellent replacement for Dembele. The 24-year-old constantly breaks the line using his dribbling ability and would excel alongside the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli. The former Inter Milan man can also operate in a deep-lying playmaker role due to his ability to dictate the tempo of a game.
A strong performance with Croatia at the World Cup could drive his price tag up and increase the number of suitors – therefore – Spurs need to move quickly to get their man.
