Newcastle United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side record a fourth Premier League victory of the season on Saturday courtesy of a 1-0 success over struggling Crystal Palace at St James’ Park.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Eagles having drawn their previous two games against Liverpool and Southampton despite good performances, yet they got back to winning ways in the North East to inflict further misery on Palace boss Roy Hodgson. Mikel Merino’s 86th minute header from an excellent Matt Ritchie cross was enough to seal the three points for the Magpies, in turn moving them up to seventh place in the Premier League table and to within two points of the top four.
Thus, it has been a great week for our resident Newcastle supporters, who are now turning their attentions to a tricky trip to Burnley on Monday night, where they hope Benitez’s men can record a second away win of the campaign.
And pundit Paul Merson is backing them to do just that at Turf Moor, with the 46-year-old making such predictions in his weekly column on Sky Sports.
The former midfielder spent 12 years at Arsenal between 1985 and 1997 and helped the club win two First Division titles, and also spent time at Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Portsmouth, and Walsall amongst others before moving into punditry post-retirement.
And he has backed Benitez’s men to win 2-1 in Lancashire on Monday night, which is hugely significant given that it is the first time this season that Merson has predicted Newcastle to win.
And, unsurprisingly, several Magpies supporters took to Twitter to convey their shock and concern at the 46-year-old’s prediction…
