James Pearce says that Liverpool are unlikely to make any major signings this summer.

The Reds have been linked with moves for Timo Werner, Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe in recent months and, after spending less than £10m this year, many will have hoped that this summer would mark a change in transfer policy. However, The Athletic writer has now poured cold water on any of those wishes. He wrote:
“Senior Anfield sources insist Liverpool are unlikely to make any major signings this summer. They point to the huge financial impact of the crisis and the fact that as things stand they don’t even know either when the transfer window will open or when next season will start.”
On the face of it, it could be argued that they do not need to strengthen given the season they have had so far. No-one has been able to challenge them at the top of the Premier League, with their 25-point lead the biggest margin that England’s top tier has ever seen.

However, the failure to add top quality to their squad could see them left behind. The coronavirus pandemic is likely to have an impact on spending this summer but the Premier League is arguably the richest on the planet – the top clubs will still have some leftover cash. The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea will be seeking to move up the table – the latter have already signed Hakim Ziyech – whilst Newcastle could be a new player at the top table if their proposed takeover is completed.
By failing to bring in any new signings, Liverpool could stagnate, and that is the last thing Jurgen Klopp will want. As such, the senior officials should revise their plan. They may not need to go on a huge spending spree, but reinforcements in one or two areas could see them retain the edge that they currently possess.
