Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern have again witnessed a lacklustre home performance from their side upon the return of the Premier League at the weekend.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Marco Silva’s Watford on Saturday, which may have only condemned the Saints to their first league defeat of the campaign, but it now means that they have failed to score in three of their four league matches this term.
And, with the South Coast club having netted just ten times at St Mary’s in 2017, it appears that some Saints fans have had enough, as recent reports in The Daily Mail suggest that the new boss is facing a revolt from the fans following a chorus of boos at the end of Saturday’s clash.
Former boss Claude Puel was relieved of his duties over the summer as a result of his negative style of play, despite leading the club to the League Cup final and an eighth place finish, yet the early indications of Pellegrino’s stewardship is that of similarity to the Frenchman’s era.
Southampton have managed just eight shots on target in their three home games this term, and you sense that things need to improve quickly at St Mary’s to keep Saints fans in the Tavern reasonably satisfied.
Landlord’s verdict: It took Southampton until the 92nd minute of the game on Saturday to record a shot on target, which was just their eighth on target from their three home Premier League games this season.
And Saturday’s defeat to Watford, as well as the manner of it, appears to be testing the patience of Saints fans, with many leaving before the end, and those that did stay voicing their displeasure of their side’s efforts at the final whistle.
And it leaves new boss Mauricio Pellegrino facing an early battle to win over the supporters, especially given that former manager Claude Puel was sacked over the summer for a similarly negative style of play.
It is only one defeat, and their first of the season at that, but Southampton fans will be hoping for much more from their side going forward the next time they play at St Mary’s, albeit that is against Manchester United on September 23.
