Celtic fans still reminisce over Larsson’s winner against Boavista

Tonight will see Celtic return to European competition as they host Rosenborg in the Europa League group stages. Strangely enough, the Hoops’ return to European action falls on the birthday of Henrik Larsson, their all-time leading goalscorer in Europe. The club took to Twitter today to ask the fans what their favourite of his goals was and there’s only one winner.

Henrik Larsson isn’t known as ‘The King of Glasgow’ and ‘The King of Kings’  for nothing. The Swedish striker was a fierce competitor and he rarely got outscored in a match. During his time at Celtic, he got so close to winning the Europa League, or the UEFA Cup as it was then known, back in 2003. His memorable winner away at Boavista put The Hoops into the final and whilst they lost to Porto 3-2, they’ll never forget that season.

Whenever you mention the name Henrik Larsson to a Celtic fans they will always picture that goal away in Portugal and whilst they failed to bring home the trophy from the Estadio Olimpico de Sevilla in the final, the goals from Larsson and the memories from the cup run will live long in the memories of the Celtic fans. It seems apt that the club will be returning to Europa League action on Larsson’s birthday and hopefully the club’s current crop of frontmen can inspire them to a win against Rosenborg.

The Hoops have so many good memories of Larsson but the winner away at Boavista will always top the lot.
