John Hartson is of the opinion that Neil Lennon will be able to get the best out of Mohamed Elyounoussi during his time at Celtic.
The Norway international arrived at Celtic Park on a season-long loan from Southampton at the end of August after having a difficult debut campaign on the south coast – and, perhaps, one he would rather try and forget in a hurry.
Still only 25-years-old, the winger failed to make an impact following his reported £16m (BBC) deal from Basel last summer as he made just 19 appearances for the Saints, failing to make a mark in the attacking columns and appeared to be frozen out of the side once Ralph Hasenhuttl took over (Transfermarkt).
However, Hartson feels Lennon will be able to get Elyounoussi back to his best and believes the player will become a valuable asset for the Hoops.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, he said: “I think he’ll be a great signing for Neil Lennon, he’s got that bit of quality in the final third. He’ll be a valuable asset for Celtic no doubt about that.
“Neil Lennon’s good at that. He’s good at putting players in that maybe lost their way a little bit, showed some promise and then just lost their way, and then Neil’s great at bringing them in for Celtic and giving them confidence.”
Indeed, it would appear as though Elyounoussi, perhaps, needs an arm around him to rebuild his confidence as his time at Basel would suggest that he has all the quality needed to be a valuable asset for Celtic.
In his time in Switzerland, the £13.5m-rated winger managed to achieve an impressive 23 goals and 30 assists in his 84 total appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt).
Thus, the move appears to have already worked brilliantly for Lennon and the 25-year-old as he has already assisted one goal in his two appearances for the Scottish Premiership giants.
It will be intriguing to see if Lennon is the right man to bring Elyounoussi’s quality through at Celtic and if Hartson is right, then the Hoops could have an exceptional winger on their hands this season.
