Over the years, Celtic have earned the reputation for unearthing stars before barely anyone knew them.
Virgil van Dijk’s unparallel rise is the prime example for the Hoops’ eye for talents, as it seems they’ve caught attention for another rising sensation from the obscure parts of Netherlands.
Indeed, according to reports from VI via (HITC), the Scottish giants have turned their attention towards 17-year-old defensive sensation Xavier Mbuyamba. Currently playing in his country’s second division, he’s gained attention from many European giants with some powerful performances for MVV Maastricht.
The 6’5 centre-back can also operate as a right-back and is nearing the end of his contract with MVV. Despite having made 11 appearances in Eerste Divisie, the 17-year-old is seemingly willing for a new adventure. He’s strong, versatile and apparently sought after by many clubs due to his dynamic presence in defence. Indeed, Liverpool along with Bayern Munich are also on his trail this summer.
As Celtic are themselves craving for defensive reinforcements, Mbuyama might be appealed to with assurances in getting more game-time. The 17-year-old will get little game-time at either giant, but can start quite a few games for the Hoops. As a result, he can continue his development in the intense Scottish Premiership to build himself into a much more assertive defender.
Just look at how some of the others have developed. The likes of Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Moussa Dembele have certainly benefitted from that avenue, after all.
If the Hoops are still looking for van Dijk’s replacement, Mbuyama stands as a strong option. He already looks an impenetrable defender coming out of Netherlands’ golden age and can fortify Celtic’s defence with a protective layer for years to come.
