Former Aston Villa and Rangers defender Alan Hutton believes Celtic could have found another future prospect after recent reports have seen them linked with West Ham academy star Veron Parkes.
According to Football Insider, it isn’t just the Scottish side who are interested in the player, with European clubs like AS Monaco as well as MLS side New York Red Bulls keeping tabs on him.
The centre-forward is only 18 years-old, per Transfermarkt but has been setting the U18 Premier League alight, and this has clearly been noted by the Hoops.
Should the club sign Parkes?
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said: “Times have changed, players aren’t willing, even at a very young age, to sit for years and do nothing, they want to get out there and play. We’ve seen it with so many players, whether it be Gilmour leaving Rangers to go down to Chelsea – you would have thought is that the best move but look, he’s cracked it – or at a higher level Sancho leaving Manchester City to join Dortmund.
“The kids aren’t scared to make a big decision and this is obviously yet another one. Jeremie Frimpong did it so these guys will see people like that and think: ‘I can do that, I’m willing to do that, step out my comfort zone and play week in, week out.’
“What’s the point of just sitting at West Ham for years and you just go missing so I think it’s a great thing.”
It is hard to disagree with Hutton here, indeed Frimpong made the move from Manchester City to Celtic last summer after playing for City’s U23 side, and in his debut campaign, he has managed to win two trophies, the Premiership and the League Cup, and has also been nominated by the club for the Player of the Year award, via Celtic FC.
Parkes, who has scored eleven goals in fourteen appearances, will feel like he will be able to make the step up to professional football sooner rather than later and if Celtic do make a formal approach for the forward, it will be hard to say no after seeing Frimpong’s rise at the club. He has also turned down a professional contract at the Hammers, so the Hoops will be even more hopeful that they can acquire the player, per Football Insider.
