Loads of Celtic fans are hopeful that Odsonne Edouard will sign a new contract at the club, and former Scotland full-back Alan Hutton believes it is the best bit of business the club can do in the summer transfer window.
It seems like the club hope that the Frenchman can be tied down with a new contract, as Neil Lennon recently said: “There are discussions at the minute with his representatives. Ultimately he’s a player we want around. He’s a fantastic player. He’s really blossomed over the last couple of seasons,” per Sky Sports.
Following this news, Hutton spoke to Football Insider and said: “He has been phenomenal for them and he would be a huge miss if he goes. There is not a lot of talk about him coming into the Premier League at the moment because there has been a lack of football.
“There is now a real opportunity for Celtic now because their season is finished and we are still some way off our transfer window opening. The can try and entice him into a new deal.
“He is the best signing Celtic can make this summer.”
It is hard to disagree with the former Aston Villa player here, Edouard’s goal contributions have been vital to the Hoops’ success since he joined the club, with the forward scoring 60 goals whilst also picking up 31 assists in 126 appearances for the club in all competitions, per Transfermarkt. During this time the club have won all eight of the domestic titles available.
This has seen him linked with Premier League clubs like Arsenal, which has seen many Celts fans worried. However these contract talks could be a warning to teams who think they can acquire players from the Hoops due to the league they are in on the cheap.
Even though the deal might not mean he stays forever, it will raise the valuation on him and means he will definitely stay for next season which could see the club have ultimate bragging rights over their Old Firm rivals as they look to do something never done in Scottish Premiership history and win ten titles in a row, per talkSPORT.
It will be interesting to see what happens following the latest news, but if he does sign a new contract then there will be huge celebrations across the fan base and it will give the club a huge boost for next season.
