Former Scotland defender Alan Hutton has said that the comparison between on-loan Celtic winger Mohamed Elyounoussi and former Hoops player Patrick Roberts are fair.
Who has more potential, Odsonne Edouard or Moussa Dembele?
When asked if Elyounoussi had filled the void left by the Manchester City-owned player, Hutton told Football Insider: “Yeah, it’s a really good comparison. Both players are that type to get bums off the seats and lift the crowd.
“They can both bring something a little bit different. He (Elyounoussi) is doing brilliant, as a Rangers guy, sometimes I take the Rangers glasses off, he’s been brilliant for them. He’s in a great place at the moment and doing well for Celtic.”
If anything, Hutton is understating the impact that Elyounoussi has made by saying that he’s “doing well for Celtic”.
It’s a bout of form reminiscent of Roberts’ first few months at the club in 2015/16, when he scored six times in his final eight Premiership games that season after none in his first three. [via TransferMarkt]
Elyounoussi is on course to be even more prolific than the English winger at Celtic, with the Norwegian needing just two more goals to reach half of Roberts’ total of 18 in 78 games for the club. Considering that Elyounoussi has only played 10 times for the Hoops prior to tonight’s match against Lazio, that is an exceptional return.
It’s easy to see why Hutton has drawn comparisons between the two players, seeing as they are both wingers who made a good start to life at Celtic on loan from English Premier League clubs.
However, if Elyounoussi continues in his current vein, he looks set to leave Roberts’ Celtic record trailing in his wake.
