Former Hull City defender Alex Bruce has weighed in on the discussions around Celtic player Jonny Hayes and his exit rumours, and he is shocked to hear that as it stands the player has not been offered a contract.
According the The Scottish Sun, the 32 year-old’s future at the Hoops is in doubt as his contract runs out this summer and there is currently no talks to extend it. He has managed two goals and seven assists since joining the Hoops in 2017, per Transfermarkt.
Would you keep Hayes at the club?
Speaking to Football Insider about whether letting Hayes go is a mistake, Bruce said, “Yes, but it all depends on his contract and if he’s happy with it. He’s a good, good squad player, you can see Lenny plays him in the big games and he’s one of them reliable types so it will be a loss to Celtic, losing him, because he’s one of those manager’s dreams.
“He can play a number of positions, he looks a good lad as well so I’d be surprised if he leaves, I’d be surprised if they let him go.”
It is hard to disagree with Bruce here, when you think of a hard working player, Hayes comes to mind. Indeed the experienced SPFL player managed 30 goals and 70 assists in 207 appearances at Aberdeen, per Transfermarkt, highlighting that he knows what to do to succeed at this level.
At his age, it is clear that he will not play every game, but he can be an experienced head and possibly something of a leader for the club as they look to win 10 titles in a row next season.
Like Bruce says, he can play a number of positions, in fact whilst at Celtic, the Scottish international has played eleven times at left-back, ten times as a left midfielder, five times as a right midfielder, three times as a right winger and once as a centre-forward and a central attacking midfielder, per Transfermarkt.
To have a player be able to fill in in so many positions is a unique thing to have in any squad, and for this reason alone the club should be looking to keep him and it highlights why his possible exit is such a surprise to many pundits.
