The 32-year-old managed two goals and seven assists since joining the Hoops in 2017, per Transfermarkt, and was seen as an experienced head in Neil Lennon’s squad. Indeed, the Republic of Ireland international scored 30 goals and supplied 70 assists in 207 appearances at Aberdeen, per Transfermarkt, highlighting that he is a more than capable player at Premiership level.
“Jonny Hayes was never going to be a certain starter for Celtic, but I tell you what, when the boy came in, he played well, whether it was at left-back, at wing-back or out on the left side and even on the right side I have seen him play a couple of times.
“He always did a good job, and I believe that you always need players, so I was surprised that Lenny let him go.”
It is hard to disagree with Ferguson here – when you think of a hard-working player with the versatility to play in several positions, Hayes comes to mind. Whilst he might not have seemed the most glamorous player in Celtic’s squad, he is someone that every team would love to have as he has played in multiple positions for the Hoops, per Transfermarkt.
At the age of 32, he is indeed approaching the twilight of his career, but he is an experienced head and possibly something of a leader for the club as they look to win a 10th consecutive league title next season, so it will be interesting to see how the club replace him over the summer.
