Celtic: Hoops enter transfer race for Lyle Taylor

Celtic: Hoops enter transfer race for Lyle Taylor - Celtic

Celtic are seeking to bolster their attacking options for next season as their latest reported transfer target in that area of the pitch is Charlton’s Lyle Taylor.

According to the Nottingham Post, the Hoops have recently entered the race for the forward, with Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Old Firm rivals Rangers all linked to the player as well as a host of other sides, via TEAMtalk.

The forward is available on a free transfer after refusing to sign a contract extension with Championship side Charlton and such was his desperation for a move that he refused to sign an ’emergency’ extension as the season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This led to him being heavily criticised by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville [The Football Show via Football League World] for walking out early on his Charlton contract with the Addicks fighting a relegation battle.

Taylor boasts a good record wherever he has played. This has included the English Football League as well as the SPFL and he has scored 142 goals in 386 appearances, per Transfermarkt, so he could be a decent asset to have – but only as cover for Odsonne Edouard as Taylor has not been nearly as prolific as the Frenchman this season (11 goals to 27).

To be able to acquire a prolific player on a free seems like a no-brainer and hopefully the Hoops’ recent successes will mean that they can beat other clubs to the signing.

It is important to add strength in depth to the squad, especially with three domestic competitions and European competition to handle, so if their current attacking options were to get injured or suffer a lapse in form, then Taylor could be a great asset to call upon if Neil Lennon can bring him to Parkhead.
