Celtic have identified Brentford left-back Rico Henry as a potential replacement for Kieran Tierney.
The Scottish Sun report that the 22-year-old Championship defender will be the player Celtic make a move for if star man Kieran Tierney leaves for Arsenal this summer, with Sky Sports News reporting that the Gunners are likely to come in for a third bid before the end of the English transfer window.
Brentford are looking at £7m for Henry if Celtic are to come in for the English youngster. The Hoops are demanding for a fee of around £25m for Tierney from Arsenal.
The Daily Mail once compared Henry to former England international Kenny Samson during his Walsall days due to his ability to blitz up the pitch in attack whilst also being able to recover defensively, and although the left-back’s career has stalled slightly, in large part due to long-term injuries (he missed 117 games in just over two years according to Transfermarkt), the 22-year-old could make for a fine replacement for Tierney.
Playing as a left wing-back in a 3-4-3 formation at Brentford, Henry offers a similar playing style as to what Tierney has done in the past with Celtic, with a scout report from Total Football Analysis showing that the Scottish full-back enjoys going forward and is often used as a winger rather than a left-back.
As a team scout report from Football BH shows, Henry is able to control the left flank of the pitch well, and when fit and firing on all cylinders, the youngster is a quality and exciting player in the Championship, with the defender being nominated for Player of the Month last season for the month of January after returning from a serious knee injury (per Brentford’s official website).
Tierney’s proposed move to Arsenal will come to a head this week with the transfer window for Premier League teams ending this week, but if the Celtic academy product is to make the move south of the border, Henry could be a suitable replacement for the Scottish Premiership champions.
At the same age as Tierney and a player with a similar playing style to the Scottish international, Celtic will do well to replace the potentially Arsenal-bound defender with Henry, who could be a seemingly good replacement for Neil Lennon’s side.
