It’s fair to say that the David Turnbull saga is now dragging on, as even after having their offer for him accepted, Celtic’s deal for the 19-year-old looked to hit a snag after being unable to agree terms with his agent.
Indeed, the Hoops’ public ultimatum (via Sky Sports) recently showed their strong stance in not being held to ransom, which is admirable. Still, according to the Scottish Sun, Sheffield Wednesday have apparently agreed to match Celtic’s £3 million bid and are allegedly planning on hijacking the move for the talented youngster.
Modern football. Sigh.
So, is he worth the hassle?
Well, when you look into his superiority in terms of having scored and assisted (23, via Transfermarkt) more goals in all competitions than Tom Rogic (11) and Olivier Ntcham (7) combined last season, you’d get the impression that he is. After all, Ntcham is said by the Daily Record to be on Marseille’s radar and Rogic missed 14 games due to injury, so there might be a space for the Motherwell man.
Indeed, while the Bhoys cantered to another league title they did score five fewer goals than their closest challengers, so there is certainly room for more firepower.
With manager Stephen Robinson (quotes sourced by the Evening News) labelling him as “exquisite”, and a player apparently very easy on the eye, Celtic would be getting a promising young player. As BBC Sport stated, the 19-year-old having contributed towards 33% of Motherwell’s goals last season and also having the best (51%) shooting accuracy (more than Odsonne Edouard or even Alfredo Morelos) in the league, he does look worth the hassle.
Clearly, a club the size of Celtic won’t initially be thinking about selling players on right away but, considering his promise, there is also a chance of a high sell-on value in the coming years, so shelling out now might be a good idea.
While former Rangers striker Kevin Kyle criticized Turnbull and his agent on Twitter for wanting better wages, there is certainly a lot of potential here. Clearly it won’t be easy, but the club should push the boat out for Turnbull.
