Celtic supporters have been pretty upbeat in recent times after seeing their side record an emphatic victory heading into the second international break of the season.
Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their encounter with St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend off the back of losing 3-1 to Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League a few days earlier, and thus seeking a response at McDiarmid Park on Sunday. And the Bhoys produced arguably their best performance of the season in putting six past Tommy Wright’s side, four of which coming from James Forrest alongside strikes from Odsonne Edouard and Callum McGregor to seal a comprehensive victory for the defending champions.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Celtic fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been taking to Twitter in recent times to comment upon Patrick Roberts’ current loan spell at Spanish side Girona, which isn’t really going to plan for the attacker.
As such, many of those supporters are calling for their side to try and re-sign the 21-year-old come the New Year, and they are absolutely right to do so as luring the Englishman back to Parkhead, given his efforts at the club in the past, could prove to be a January masterstroke.
The former England Under-20 international is currently on the books at Premier League champions Manchester City following his move there from Fulham back in 2015, but such is the embarrassment of riches available to Citizens boss Pep Guardiola, Roberts has only mustered three senior appearances for the club in the last three years.
In fact, he has enjoyed two-and-a-half years on loan at Celtic as he sought the regular football he was never likely to get at the Etihad Stadium, in which time he certainly became a fan favourite given his exploits for the Bhoys.
Roberts bagged six goals in just 11 league games in his first spell in the second half of the 2015/16 season before taking it up another level the campaign after in netting 11 goals and laying on 19 assists for Rodgers’ side, thus helping them to the clean sweep of domestic honours.
Yes, injuries seriously thwarted his time at the club in the 2017/18 campaign, restricting him to only 18 appearances in all competitions, but there is little doubting that Roberts proved his worth for much of his time north of the border, and as such could be exactly what the Bhoys need heading into the second half of the season.
Sunday aside, it has been something of a struggle for Rodgers’ team this season with a number of lacklustre performances, yet bringing someone energetic and dynamic like Roberts to Celtic Park could help inject that spark that has been often missing from the champions this season.
And with the 21-year-old only mustering five La Liga appearances for Girona this term, none of which having been starts, the lure of a return to Celtic, and the likelihood of more regular football than he is currently getting in Spain, may be of interest to the Englishman.
Thus, those Celtic fans calling for Roberts’ return in January are absolutely right, as were he to live up to the expectations of his previous spell at the club, Rodgers could pull off a January masterstroke in bringing him back to Parkhead.
