Celtic: Fans did not agree with James Forrest being played on the left wing against St Mirren - Celtic

Celtic manager Neil Lennon came in for questioning from a lot of the club’s supporters over one particular decision on Boxing Day.

The Hoops’ official Twitter channel @CelticFC shared the starting line-up for the game against St Mirren just under 75 minutes before kick-off, with many correctly inferring that James Forrest would start on the left-hand side of an attacking midfield three.

The 28-year-old is primarily a right midfielder but has now played on the left in Celtic’s last four matches, with regular left winger Mohamed Elyounoussi still injured and Mikey Johnston among the substitutes.

Lennon’s decision to stick with Forrest on the left may have met with plenty of disagreement before the match but the call would be vindicated as the Scotland international scored what ultimately proved to be the winning goal in a 2-1 victory, taking the ball around St Mirren goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky before dispatching to the net in the 32nd minute. John Reid of 67hailhail.com said it was Forrest’s “best Celtic performance in a few weeks”, while Mark Hendry of Herald Scotland wrote that he “always caused trouble for the home side” in Paisley.

His goal-scoring display was the ideal riposte to these pre-match lamentations from some Hoops fans about his starting position:
