Celtic are out of the Champions League for another season and one man who will likely want to forget last night’s defeat to CFR Cluj quickly is captain Scott Brown.
With Celtic leading the match 2-1 and the tie 3-2 going into the final 15 minutes of the game, the midfielder handled the ball from a CFR Cluj corner and gave away a penalty from which Billel Omrani scored. [via BBC]
Brown’s night got worse after the match when he ‘liked’ a tweet in which he was tagged that castigated Neil Lennon’s tactics and team selection, as reported by Football Scotland.
Upon realising the consequences of that action, the 34-year-old used his own Twitter account to set the record straight.
Was just flicking through Twitter must of touched the button by accident.. Not my style to slag anyone off on Twitter. I am fully behind the manager and all the players are as well. If anyone should be getting a slagging or a abuse it’s all on me tonight as didn’t perform. Sorry

Brown came in for some less than celebratory assessments for his performance against CFR Cluj. Ryan Brown of Read Celtic gave him a rating of just four and said: “If his handball was deliberate then it’s utterly inexcusable from the captain.”
For 67hailhail.com, Hamish Carton awarded him a lowly rating of three, saying that he “looked off the pace for a lot of the match”.
These Celtic supporters on Twitter were also critical of Brown after last night’s Champions League exit:
Well said. You can both go. The single most embarrassing performance by a Celtic captain I've seen in forty years. Just go. And take the ginger Guardiola with you.

Just do the honourable thing and retire mate

It's time to step aside as captain for the good of the team, if you love the club as you say do you'll do the right thing.

Can you explain your thinking behind the handball?

Too right mate, you weren’t very good.

Scott wake up its morning time smell the coffee,Lenny is not up to the job and you & the players should be ashamed. This is simply not good enough. The board in Celtic is a joke bank balance 1st fans 2nd. Also they let J McGinn go they wouldn’t pay 3million this is Celtic shocking

Correct, you didn’t. Major changes needed. McGregor at LB was a shambolic decision. For NL to deny it is fooling nobody. This team needs surgery ASAP
