Celtic: Fans hoping for further contract extensions after Callum McGregor’s new deal

Celtic confirmed this morning that midfielder Callum McGregor has signed a new five-year contract that will keep him at the club until at least 2024.

The Hoops’ official Twitter channel @CelticFC announced the news of the 26-year-old’s contract extension to its followers on Wednesday morning.

McGregor came through the club’s academy and has played 248 times for the first team since his debut in July 2014, when he scored against KR Reykjavik in a Champions League qualifier.

He had the feat of playing more first team football than anyone else in the world last season, amassing 5,894 minutes across 69 matches for Celtic and Scotland (as per celticfc.net), a remarkable durability that led to ex-Scotland international Alan Hutton likening him to “the Energizer bunny” when speaking to Football Insider.

McGregor has continued to be a near-constant presence in Neil Lennon’s line-up this term, starting all but one of Celtic’s 25 matches in all competitions and completing the entirety of 22 games, one of which went to extra time. [via TransferMarkt]

These Celtic fans on Twitter may have been pleased to see the 26-year-old committing his future to the club, but have called for the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie to do likewise given their frequent goalscoring exploits this season:
