Gavin Wallace has made some claims following the recent outbreak which has seen the Scottish football season grind to a halt.
According to the BBC journalist, football will not resume in the country until September and the league standings for the current campaign will be final. He also went on to claim that due to insurance not being able to cover the risks of catching the virus from playing, games will not be played behind closed doors. Finally, Wallace added that the league cup will not be played next season.
Should the news be true, the Hoops will notch up yet another league title due to the fact they currently sit 13-points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. It will continue the Glasgow outfit’s sheer dominance of the top-flight in Scotland with Neil Lennon’s men securing their ninth consecutive league title.
However, the news over the league cup potentially being cancelled for next year certainly won’t sit well with the supporters, who have lapped up their club dominate the domestic cup competitions for a few campaigns now. The Paradise outfit have won the competition four years on the bounce, a feat which has seen them win the treble in the last three seasons (via Transfermarkt).
The most recent success saw them beat Rangers 1-0 back in December 2019 after Christopher Jullien headed home the winner. It came despite the fact the Hoops were down to 10 men for a large part of the match after youngster Jeremie Frimpong was sent-off (via BBC).
Missing out on the chance to continue their supremacy in domestic football really is disappointing from a Celtic point-of-view. More trebles could’ve been on the cards and more bragging rights to go along with them. However, with Wallace revealing that the Betfred cup will be cancelled for next season, it seems as though the league and Scottish Cup double will have to be the target, and fans will disappointingly have to forget about any dreams of continuing their remarkable run of consecutive domestic trebles.
