Celtic: Hoops can get by just fine without Oliver Burke next season

Four goals in 19 games is hardly setting the world alight, is it? They’re the numbers that Oliver Burke put in for Celtic last season, although now it seems he won’t get a chance to add to that as WBA technical director Luke Dowling has slammed Neil Lennon for his treatment of the player.

The comments from Dowling, documented by The Mirror, have been scathing as he’s ruled out any chance of Oli Burke making a return to Parkhead anytime soon. That shouldn’t come as too much of a blow to Celtic fans, though, as the chances are they wouldn’t have been impressed by him.

Whilst Burke may have managed to score four times in 19 games, he was comfortably outshone by two young Scots who are very similar in age and position to him, both Mikey Johnston and Ryan Christie. Christie bagged 11 goals in 38 whilst Johnston managed five in his 23 games this season, so we know who we’d rather. Burke failed to score in his last three Scottish Premiership games, so he didn’t exactly leave a lasting impression and, even Hoops legend Jackie McNamara wasn’t sure whether Celtic should sign him permanently back in May (Football Insider).

It isn’t positive viewing for Oliver Burke, but at least now that he knows he won’t be returning to Parkhead he can focus on his career at West Brom. From a Celtic point of view, it’s now about getting the right players in this summer before going again with their host of young guns like Johnston and Christie for the 2019/20 season.

Celtic fans, what are your thoughts on the Burke situation? Let us know!
