Celtic have reportedly been eyeing a move for Serhou Guirassy, but the striker’s statistics suggest he would not be a good replacement for Odsonne Edouard, who recently left the door open for a possible exit in the future (Goal).
According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur sent scouts to watch Guirassy in action for Amiens this weekend, as the 23 year-old bagged a brace in his side’s remarkable 4-4 draw against Paris Saint-Germain. According to their report, Spurs aren’t the only ones interested though, with Celtic, Aston Villa and Leicester all monitoring the forward as well. Amiens value their star man at £18m, and one would have to assume he would be a replacement for Edouard at that sort of fee, but what exactly would he bring for that price?
Aerial threat: Perhaps Guirassy’s best trait this season has been his athleticism, not only possessing excellent pace but also proving to be quite the threat in the air. Per Whoscored, the young striker has won a whopping 4.2 aerial duels per game in Ligue 1 this term, the highest number of any season in his career, while also scoring one header. To put that into perspective, Edouard has won 1.8 aerial duels per game in Europa League action this campaign.
Poor in possession: While his ability to compete for high balls is impressive, Guirassy often struggles to make the right decision once the ball is won, completing just 71% of his passes this season. That number isn’t an anomaly either, as previous seasons have seen his pass accuracy fluctuate as low as 65% and 62%. In a Celtic side who dominate possession regularly, Guirassy’s poor link-up play could be a huge issue.
What really matters: Of course, the most important stat for a striker is goals, of which Guirassy has eight this season. That is also the best total he has managed in his career, with Whoscored recording just 19 professional goals since he broke into Koln’s first team in 2017. Edouard has 20 goals in the Premiership alone this season, suggesting if the Frenchman were to depart Guirassy isn’t anywhere close to being prolific enough to replace him. At £18m, this is a deal Celtic should absolutely avoid.
