Celtic appear to be in a strong position to sign a teenage winger from one of the leading clubs in the English Premier League.
The print edition of Tuttosport reported [via Sport Witness] that the Hoops have been offered the chance to sign Manchester City youngster Ian Poveda, who has also attracted interest from Leeds and Torino.
According to Tuttosport [via Sport Witness], Celtic would appear to hold the upper hand in the race for the 19-year-old, with the Premier League champions contacting the Hoops about a possible move for the teenager, who the Parkhead club could get on a free transfer as his Etihad Stadium contract expires in June.
Poveda, who plays mainly as a right winger, has made his mark for Manchester City’s youth teams this season, with two goals in four UEFA Youth League appearances and a further goal and two assists in Premier League 2 for the under-23 side.
In total he has played 84 times at various underage levels for the Etihad Stadium club, with 19 goals and 14 assists to his name. He has found it hard to break into the senior setup under Pep Guardiola, though, with his only first team game coming in last season’s Carabao Cup and just one other matchday inclusion, which also came in that competition (as per TransferMarkt).
Celtic may be helped by the previous that they have with Manchester City regarding transfers for young talents. The Hoops had Patrick Roberts on loan for a couple of spells between 2016 and 2018, while in last summer’s transfer window they signed teenage right-back Jeremie Frimpong from the English club. The 19-year-old had never played for City’s first team before moving to Celtic but has established himself at Parkhead, starting 10 league games so far and supplying two goals and two assists.
Notably, Poveda and Frimpong already know one another well from the Manchester City youth setup, having played together on 39 occasions. Also, both primarily feature on the right flank, raising the possibility of the duo linking up effectively down that side.
Although Poveda would need to dislodge James Forrest on the right wing if he were to join Celtic, not an easy ask given that the Scot has 14 goals and 16 assists already this season, Neil Lennon took a leap of faith with Frimpong, who has become a regular in the side. Therefore, Poveda could feel confident of doing the same if the Hoops can seize upon what seems to be an advantageous position given that Manchester City have reportedly offered the teenage winger to them.
Celtic fans, do you think the club are likely to sign Poveda? Do you reckon he would be a good addition to the squad given his connections with Frimpong? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
