Celtic: Interest in Birger Meling ‘growing louder’ in recent days

Celtic’s interest in Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling has been ‘growing louder’ in the last two days, according to a Croatian media outlet.

Index.hr reported that the Hoops have intensified their interest in the 24-year-old as a possible replacement for Kieran Tierney, who moved to Arsenal last week.

According to Index.hr, Meling could be sold before Rosenborg take on Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League play-off round next week, with his manager Eirik Horneland conceding that the player’s depature from the Trondheim club is likely.

Celtic would have little over two weeks to conclude a deal for the defender if they wish to sign him in the current Scottish Premiership transfer window, which closes on September 2nd.

Meling, who has appeared 10 times for the Norway national side, has been with Rosenborg since the start of the 2017 Norwegian season and played 106 times for the club, scoring four goals and supplying 18 assists.

He has played in each of their six Champions League qualifying games so far this summer, helping them to eliminate Linfield, BATE Borisov and Maribor to set up a play-off tie with Dinamo Zagreb.

He is primarily a left-back but has proven himself to be a highly versatile and adaptable player, having played in every position across the back line, as well as on the left wing and in a defensive midfield role during his career [via Transfermarkt].

Neil Lennon opted to play Callum McGregor, an attacking midfielder, in the left-back position against the Romanian side and it was a gamble which backfired spectacularly.

Ryan Brown of Read Celtic gave him a lowly rating of five and said that the 26-year-old “looked a shadow of himself and didn’t seem sure how to play that role”.

McGregor was at fault for the first CFR Cluj goal on Tuesday, allowing Ciprian Deac to run across him and failing to get off the ground as his opponent planted a header into the Celtic net. [via GreatestKooraHD on YouTube].

The fact that Lennon played McGregor very much out of his comfort zone against CFR Cluj suggests that he isn’t comfortable with his current options in that particular position.

For a player valued at just £1.35m on Transfermarkt.co.uk and who averaged three tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game in the Europa League last season [via WhoScored.com], Meling looks like he would be a very astute purchase in a position where Celtic still seem to need reinforcing.

Celtic fans, do you think Meling would be the answer at left-back this season if he signs for the Hoops? Comment below with your views!
