Former Celtic player Jackie McNamara believes that current Hoops goalkeeper Craig Gordon can keep playing for another few years.
The 36-year-old, who lost more than two years of his career to a serious injury earlier this decade, has reportedly been considering his retirement from playing at the end of this season, according to Football Insider.
Will French Eddy finish the season at Celtic?
However, McNamara feels that Gordon would still have plenty to offer to the Hoops as a player, having been impressed by how he recovered from his substantial injury troubles.
Speaking to Football Insider about the veteran goalkeeper, McNamara said: “Obviously he’ll know what he wants to do, he’s done great after his injury, he’s come back from injury and he’s still relatively young in terms of a keeper.
“He missed a wee bit when he was at Sunderland with injury and came back really well in fairness to him. He managed to come back so there’s talk of him finishing but I’d be very surprised, he’s still maybe got a few years left.”
McNamara is right to commend Gordon for the manner in which he put his injury troubles behind him since coming to Celtic in 2014.
He remained a regular in Celtic’s line-up for the following three campaigns and the first half of last season before losing his place to Scott Bain, with both goalkeepers now playing second fiddle to Fraser Forster since his loan arrival from Southampton in August.
Whenever Gordon has played over the last few months, he has largely performed quite well, with his 32 appearances last season yielding 15 clean sheets and the concession of just 27 goals, while he managed three shutouts and let in only two goals in his five games so far this season. While Forster is Lennon’s first-choice goalkeeper for now, he is currently due to return to his parent club at the end of this season. And if Celtic aren’t able to turn his loan move into a permanent one, there could be further opportunities for Gordon next season. Indeed, an injury to the Englishman over the coming months could also present the 36-year-old with his chance.
On the evidence of what he has shown with his performances in his time with the Hoops, Gordon might well have a bit to offer to Celtic yet, as McNamara has justifiably stated.
