Celtic: Kamil Grosicki emerges as late January transfer target for the Hoops - Celtic

Celtic could be set to attempt a last-gasp raid on the English Championship for a wide attacker as the end of the January transfer window approaches.

The print edition of Wednesday’s Scottish Daily Mail reported [via HITC] that the Hoops are considering a move for Hull winger Kamil Grosicki in the next couple of days, with the 31-year-old’s contract at the KCOM Stadium due to expire at the end of this season.

The Poland international is the latest winger to have been linked with Celtic this month, with Tuttomercatoweb claiming that the Hoops have shown an interest in Desportivo Aves’ Mehrdad Mohammadi. The Daily Record reported that Bristol City’s Niclas Eliasson has been scouted by the Parkhead club but the English Championship outfit have insisted he is not for sale.

Grosicki has started on the left flank in all but one of Hull’s Championship games this season, with eight goals and four assists from 30 appearances in all competitions for the Tigers in the current campaign. While he began the season in prolific form, scoring in four consecutive games during the autumn, he has not found the net in the league since September, although he was on target against Chelsea in the FA Cup last weekend. He has played 2,441 minutes for Hull this term, with one goal per 305.12 minutes and an assist every 610.25 minutes. [via TransferMarkt]

The Polish winger has played exclusively on the left this season but has also lined up as a right-winger frequently in his career, a flexibility that could increase his appeal to Neil Lennon. Celtic have not been lacking for goals from the wide positions in 2019/20 – prior to Wednesday’s game at St Johnstone, right-winger James Forrest had scored 14 goals, with left-wingers Mohamed Elyounoussi and Mikey Johnston netting seven and six respectively.

However, the Hoops do not have huge depth in the wide areas. The only right-winger alternatives to Forrest are Jonny Hayes, who has played mostly at left-back this season, and Marian Shved, who has barely been used by Lennon. On the left, both Elyounoussi and Johnston have had their injury troubles in recent months, with the former due to return to Southampton in the summer once his season-long loan deal expires.

Celtic’s wide options were trimmed earlier this month by the sale of Scott Sinclair to Preston, so perhaps it is not surprising that the club are seemingly on the lookout for a winger in this transfer window, even though Lennon has said that he has been pleased with their business so far in January (as per @CelticFC on Twitter).

Grosicki has a solid scoring record at Hull this season and has plenty of experience operating on both flanks, so he could prove an ideal addition for the Hoops if they can strike a last-gasp deal for him before Friday’s transfer deadline, especially with Lennon not having huge depth in the wide positions.

Celtic fans, do you feel Grosicki would be a good addition if the Hoops sign him before the transfer window closes? Do you think a deal for him in that time is likely to happen? Share your views in the comments section below!
