Former Celtic striker Kenny Miller believes that Hoops winger James Forrest is currently the best player in his position in Scotland.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, the 39-year-old Partick Thistle forward believes that the Celtic winger has improved massively in recent years and is delivering on the potential he displayed earlier in his career.
“He has gone from a young player with lots of potential to actually realising that potential. Not only that but he has added some real numbers to his game – his assists, his goals have been untouchable really over the last couple of seasons.
“So for me he is the most dangerous and productive player in that position in the country at the moment.”
Miller is right to speak highly of Forrest’s vastly improved goal contribution over recent seasons, as the 28-year-old’s figures have shot up enormously since the 2015/16 campaign.
Forrest played 33 games for Celtic that season but had a paltry return of two goals and two assists (0.06 per game). [via TransferMarkt]
After Brendan Rodgers came to the club in summer 2016, the Scotland winger’s end product began to rise, with eight goals and 13 assists in 46 matches (0.17 goals and 0.28 assists per game) in the Antrim man’s first season in charge at Parkhead. [via TransferMarkt]
Forrest made 58 appearances for the Hoops in the following season, scoring 17 goals (0.29 per game) and setting up another 10 (0.17 assists per game). [via TransferMarkt]
Last season his scoring return climbed again, with 18 goals in 56 matches (0.32 per game), along with 20 assists (0.36 per game). [via TransferMarkt]
Following his goal and two assists against Aberdeen on Sunday, he has nine goals and 11 assists in 21 matches already this season, a return of 0.43 goals and 0.52 assists per game. [via TransferMarkt]
Forrest has not only improved his tally of goals every year since 2015/16; his averages have also consistently increased and he is well on course to surpass his goal tally from last season yet again.
Only Ryan Christie (12) and Odsonne Edouard (11) have scored more goals for Celtic so far in 2019/20, while only the Frenchman has been involved in as many goals as Forrest (20 each). [via TransferMarkt]
He is currently the highest-scoring winger in the Scottish Premiership and, looking at the consistent improvement on his goal return over the last four years, Miller is absolutely right to commend Forrest for building on his earlier potential by becoming a much more effective player in recent years.
Who has more potential, Odsonne Edouard or Moussa Dembele?
