Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell believes the pressure will be on Neil Lennon’s replacement almost immediately if the board opt to make a change this summer.
Lampard to Parkhead?
It has been a woeful campaign for the Bhoys. They are currently 18 points behind arch-rivals Rangers, albeit with a game in hand, and huge pressure is on the shoulders of the Northern Irish tactician.
The Green Brigade have organised protests to have Lennon sacked, as well as the unpopular chief executive Peter Lawwell over the club’s handling of their controversial Dubai training camp in December.
As a result, new faces have been linked with the Celtic hot seat, including Lampard who was recently sacked by Chelsea. Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell believes that the pressure will be on Lennon’s successor if the board choose to let him go.
Asked whether Lampard or Terry could have the same impact on Celtic as Steven Gerrard has had on Rangers, he said: “It’s hard to say. You’re looking at both clubs and this is obviously Steven Gerrard’s third season there. If either of these guys, [John] Terry or Lampard, come in you’re looking at them hitting the ground running.
“You look at that Celtic squad and of course they can do it because they’ve won nine-in-a-row. They didn’t quite get to 10-in-a-row but they still won the cup this season, they’ve still got winners in the dressing room.
“So why couldn’t they do what Rangers have done? But whoever does go in there needs to compete.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
The forthcoming summer for Celtic could be one of the biggest in recent years. Whatever decision the board makes regarding Lennon and Lampard, could be pivotal in the club’s short-term success.
But Campbell is spot on here. Whoever takes charge will have to immediately close the gap to Rangers, who look destined at this time to stop the Hoops from achieving 10-in-a-row.
That being said, there is still three months of the season left to play and a lot can happen during that timeframe. The summer will reveal the board’s hand.
