He also went on to say that there has been interest in the player from several clubs with many of them having followed him for a ‘long period’.
He has been a superb addition to the side, making over 120 appearances across all competitions (via Transfermarkt). His time has also been a monumental success with the outfit having won back-to-back trebles.
However, what has really caught the eye is his performances in defence with the figure having drawn comparisons with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. Why has he drawn such comparisons? Well, he possesses similar traits to the Dutchman, proving to be ‘dominant in the air’ and being ‘comfortable with the ball at his feet’ (via Herald Scotland).
His passing accuracy this season has been great as Ajer averages 88.5% with the Netherlands international averaging just over 4% more at 92.54%. They are also incredibly similar when it comes to the number of aerial duels per fixture with van Dijk averaging 6.5 per game whilst the Norway international has competed in 5.13 per fixture (via Wyscout).
Despite playing in Scotland, the centre-half seemingly has a great future ahead of him given his stats. Similarly to the 6 foot 5 man, van Dijk performed well in the Scottish top-flight before making the move to Southampton and then on to Merseyside, of course.
The bad thing for Neil Lennon is he could be losing a quality player and replacing him will not be the easiest of jobs for the senior figures at the club.
