Celtic fans have seen their backline bolstered with the signings of Christopher Jullien (BBC) and Boli Mbombo (BBC) this summer, and now it looks like they’ll be trying to improve their midfield with a move for Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers, according to Football Insider.
The 27-year-old midfielder played a pivotal role in Brentford’s Championship campaign last season, racking up 42 appearances in the Championship, and now it looks like Neil Lennon wants the midfielder to star for him in Celtic’s Champions League qualifying campaign.
The Championship side are holding out for £2.5m for the midfield ace but if a fee can be agreed it’s claimed that Celtic are ready to offer Sawyers a bumper long-term contract to push the deal over the finish line, giving the Championship man a chance to play European football for the first time in his career after spells at West Brom, Walsall and Brentford.
The good thing about the Brentford captain, who was made the Bees’ skipper back in November after Dean Smith left for Aston Villa, is that he is versatile, playing all through midfield, out wide and upfront, as per Transfermarkt, in his career.
Indeed, they collate he’s made almost 70 appearances as a second striker, 31 as a centre-forward and 42 as a more orthodox central midfielder, to go along with his 145 as an attacking engine room operator. Obviously, such a trait can prove useful over the course of a season (especially as the Hoops battle in cup competition), and the Daily Record did suggest back in May that Lennon ‘knows full well the value of versatility.’
The St. Kitts & Nevis international midfielder has featured 135 times for Brentford in his career, scoring eight goals and registering 20 assists as he’s fluttered between being an attacking midfielder and playing a deeper role in a midfield pivot since his move on a free from Walsall back in 2016.
Sawyers could be set to come in as a replacement midfield for Olivier Ntcham, who The Herald Scotland claim is edging closer to a £13m move to Marseille after he used some choice words to describe Scottish football and the level in which he plays at, drawing plenty of criticism from Lennon, via the BBC.
