On Saturday, 90 minutes, or maybe even 120 and beyond, is all that stands between Celtic Football Club and a place in history. For the hero of the day, if there is a green and white Hampden hero, a place in Parkhead legend. The double-treble was impressive, but the treble-treble would be an unprecedented success. So who better to secure it than a local lad?
There are already fears (via Alison Conroy) that Oliver Burke could miss the final, and considering that Mikey Johnstone has already put the Jam Tarts to the sword this week, who better to rely upon to bring the goals than the 20-year-old versatile attacker? In 22 appearances, the Glasgow local has five goals to his name, but two of those came at Parkhead on the weekend as he opened and closed the scoring in a 2-1 win over Saturday’s opponents.
It may be a daunting prospect for Johnston if he’s thrown straight into the starting lineup, but ultimately the talent is there, and be it the young Scot or anyone else, the only acceptable outcome is a win. If Neil Lennon is to put Johnston into that position, though, it would not be for the first time. In both losses that the Hoops have suffered to Rangers this season, they’ve had the youngster on the pitch searching for goals.
That may not sound much like a glowing endorsement for Johnston, featuring in two losses to the Bhoys’ greatest rivals, but it shows he’s shouldered the burden in big games before. Getting a win the weekend just gone against Hearts has given Lennon and co-first blood in the final psychologically, and considering it was young Mikey Johnston who did the damage it really should be the youngster relied upon yet again.
Last year the Bhoys were triumphant at Hampden Park with Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham the heroes, and this year it’s up for grabs who will be the man to score the winning goal, if anyone in the Bhoys’ dressing room is to do so. If Lennon does the right thing and starts his form side then it will be Johnston starting, and if that’s the case the youngster will be desperate to send the Hoops into delirium by securing the treble-treble.
