According to a statement on Twitter from French journalist Manu Lonjon, working for Eurosport.fr, Celtic are ‘considering‘ a move for promising Rennes full-back Brandon Soppy – with the teenager debatably displaying a likeness to Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker.
Soppy, who has impressed over outings in the UEFA Youth League in the last two seasons, playing a ‘major role‘ as Rennes booked their last 16 place against Inter Milan, is now attracting interest from Celtic and various other clubs throughout Europe – with manager Neil Lennon potentially facing a battle with RB Leipzig and OGC Nice for his signature.
The 18-year-old, who is yet to make his senior first team debut in Ligue 1, is already drawing in huge teams who potentially see him as one to watch for the future.
Back in November, Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanders displayed an interest in snapping up the teenager even despite his lack of senior competitive action (L’Equipe via Transfermarkt).
The Rennes academy, which has seen the likes of Yoann Gourcuff, Ousmane Dembele and Tiemoue Bakayoko mature into ‘world class‘ talents, could have another young star on their hands here – and Celtic should take the reported £7 million gamble.
Described as having ‘endless energy‘, Soppy also apparently displays a similar playing style to England international Walker – as well as having the versatility to move into a centre-back role (footballtalentscout.net). Indeed, regardless of the reported price tag, Celtic could really benefit from a gamble swoop for the teenager if his reputation is anything to go by.
